Red Light Therapy

by | 2nd Nov 2020

AS A YOUNG MAN, ‘red-light’ was synonymous with Soho prostitution, sex shops, strip clubs, and adult entertainment. These days, it has a whole new holistic meaning as a form of therapy.
I was really excited to be introduced to Red Light Therapy (RLT) because of its claims to boost physical performance, speed up muscle recovery, and stimulate the production of collagen. Red light therapy is used to treat injuries, reduce pain, relax muscles/joints, and increase blood circulation. It is used by doctors, physical therapists and pain clinics as a highly effective, non-invasive treatment with no known side effects. It is also used by professional athletes to improve performance and reduce the incidence of injuries.
According to Rhonda Klein M.D, a board-certified Dermatologist in Connecticut, red light therapy is a treatment that stimulates natural cellular processes. It delivers concentrated wavelengths of natural light into your skin, where it is absorbed by your cells. This then stimulates the production of collagen, elastin and fibroblasts, leading to potential benefits such as younger-looking skin and enhanced muscle repair. It is also used to treat psoriasis or vitiligo, and to diminish scarring. The essence of RLT is to replicate some of the powerful benefits of sun exposure in a more intense session.
I have used my RLT unit regularly for some time now and while, clearly, my bald head hasn’t sprouted hair, nor do I have spot-free skin – two of the wilder claims I had read – I did enjoy sitting in front of the panel while meditating; enjoying the warmth and glow that it radiates, which made me feel calm, and assured that I was doing something more to assist my body.
